Helen

Holland Lop
Age: 11 years 3 months
Weight: 3.5 lbs.

Helen is from a December 2013 confiscation of 215+ Holland Lop/Lionhead rabbits. She was confiscated because she was living in an unheated garage in fetid conditions.

When Helen came to IHRS in February 2014, she was very ill. She had bilateral indolent corneal ulcers, which we worked extensively with a veterinary ophthalmologist to help them heal. Though the ulcers have healed, she continues to see a veterinary ophthalmologist as she battles ongoing keratitis and has developed cataracts, glaucoma and a lens subluxation as she has aged. Helen receives two different eye drops twice daily along with occasional other medications and is such a good patient! With her history of eye issues, the veterinary ophthalmologist did not feel she would be a candidate for cataract surgery and Helen is mostly blind now. Even with her blindness, she cautiously hops around her room and still enjoys digging and bunching/scooting towels around. If she’s feeling sassy, she’ll repeatedly fling her food bowl and bang it on her water crock.

With all the health issues Helen has dealt with over the years, she remains extremely sweet and loves being pet and snuggled by her foster mom. She’ll often express her affection with a few kisses on the face.

Helen’s care requires biannual ophthalmology exams, tests and ongoing eye medications as well as senior wellness exams. Any donations to help with her medical care are greatly appreciated!
